G550: history and features
The G550 is a further development of the long-haul Gulfstream V branch with the GV-SP certification designation. Serial production of the G550 ended in 2021.
Programme development
The G550 inherited the basis of the Gulfstream V and became one of the most famous long-range aircraft of the brand. The changes affected the crew cabin and interior space, while maintaining the purpose for long routes. The end of production in 2021 completed this stage of development of the GV line.
Design
A large cabin and fuel supply allowed the G550 to be used on long routes. This is a different platform than the new G600, which replaced it.
Technical features
The G550 used Rolls-Royce BR710 engines and a PlaneView cockpit. The long-distance route and the large cabin made the platform suitable not only for business trips, but also for special surveillance aircraft and communication with additional equipment.
Purpose and uses
In addition to corporate flights, the platform was used for special and government tasks. A large cabin allows you to organize a long stay on board, but the internal layout of operators varies. The data of a particular G550 should be checked separately from the characteristics of its successors.
Its place in the family
The G550 has its own history of operation, including in special and state variants.
The platform and its development
The G550 continued the Gulfstream V long-haul line and was produced with Rolls-Royce BR710 engines. A large supply of fuel and the cabin made the model suitable for long business flights, as well as for special aircraft with additional equipment. This version has a different mass and internal structure than the usual corporate board. Common platform does not mean the same purpose of all built machines.
After the end of serial production, the G550 continued to fly with private and public operators. The range of the directory should be associated with loading: additional systems, passengers and luggage affect how much fuel can be taken. When compared to the newer G600, it is important to distinguish between the wing, engine and cockpit generations. The same cabin size does not guarantee the coincidence of speeds, costs or maintenance requirements.
Space in the salon
The G550 has a published cabin height of 1.88 m, width - 2.24 m, length - 13.39 m. Height helps to assess the convenience of movement along the aisle, width - the space between the seats. These are the dimensions of the cabin, not the free passage: decoration, furniture and the location of the seats affect the feeling of spaciousness. For a specific board, it is worth looking at the plan and photos of the interior.
Which means distance.
The G550 has a maximum range of 12,501 km (6,750 nautical miles). This is a benchmark for comparison, not a promise of non-stop travel with any number of passengers. The oncoming wind, airspace bypasses, a lot of luggage and a supply of fuel for care at another airfield change the possible route. Maximum capacity and maximum range cannot be automatically added to a single scenario.
Luggage and travel preparation
The specified volume of the luggage compartment G550 is 4.81 m3. It is impossible to translate it into the exact number of suitcases without the size of bags: the shape of the compartment, the opening of the door and the permissible weight are important. Skis, baby carriages or equipment should be matched in size. Separately, the availability of baggage in flight is specified - the volume of the compartment itself does not say anything about it.
Position on the range among the models of the manufacturer
Gulfstream's catalog for the G550 lists 6,750 nautical miles. Among the 12 models of the manufacturer of the same type with a published range, the aircraft takes 8th place when sorting from a smaller value to a larger one. Nearest G600 published 6,600 nautical miles: the difference is 150 nautical miles, or about 2% of the comparable model. This shows the scale of the difference more accurately than the conditional division of aircraft into “medium” and “long-range”. For the current model, this is a comparison of passport values; a separate flight is planned according to the actual mass and weather conditions.
Proportion of salon in comparison
The G550 published the length of the cabin 13.39 m, width 2.24 m and height 1.88 m. These three sizes describe different properties: length determines how many separate groups of furniture can be placed, and width and height affect the convenience of each zone. For comparison, the G450 published a length of 13.74 m, a width of 2.24 m and a height of 1.88 m. The difference in length is 0.35 m; it can affect the ability to separate the working group of seats from the rest area. The published width is the same, but the finish of a particular side may vary. The comparison relates to the dimensions of the empty cabin, and not to the available area after installing the kitchen, partitions and seats.
Capacity and payload
The G550 has a maximum passenger capacity of 16 people. The G600 has up to 19 passengers. The difference is 3 seats; this can change the composition of the group or allow you to give up part of the seats for the sake of a freer layout. The luggage volume of the G550 is 4.81 m3. For G600 published 4.96 m3; difference 0.15 m3. When comparing aircraft, a combination of passengers, fuel and luggage should be checked: the maximum figure for each of these parameters usually describes different design cases. It is this combination that determines how much the published range fits a group with a specific number of things.
Close to Model Capabilities
The G550 is part of the Gulfstream G line. When sorted by published distance, the closest are the G600 (6,600 nautical miles, up to 19 passengers), G650 (7,000 nautical miles, up to 19 passengers), G650ER (7,500 nautical miles, up to 19 passengers). These options differ not only in the route: the number of seats, cabin proportions and the generation of equipment have to be compared separately. If you need another passenger or more luggage, the close range of two aircraft does not mean equal suitability for the trip. If the decisive is the airfield, additionally compare the runway restrictions of specific modifications. For the released board, the year of manufacture, installed avionics and the actual interior are significant.
The history of Gulfstream: from Grumman to long-haul travel
Gulfstream began within the American company Grumman. The Gulfstream I, a turboprop designed for business travel, first flew in 1958 and entered service in 1959. The jet-powered Gulfstream II opened the next chapter: the company began developing aircraft that could carry passengers faster and farther while retaining a spacious cabin.
Savannah, Georgia, has been Gulfstream’s home since 1967. Today, Gulfstream Aerospace is part of General Dynamics. Over the decades, the brand has developed its own approach to large business jets, advancing range and speed alongside cockpit design, crew equipment and support throughout the aircraft’s operating life.
Engineering philosophy: making travel time useful
The G700 illustrates Gulfstream’s approach. Its cabin can be divided into several zones for meetings, dining and sleeping. Large oval windows bring in natural light, the ventilation system supplies fresh outside air, and the cabin is pressurised to a low altitude even when the aircraft is flying high above the ground. These features are designed for journeys in which passengers spend many hours on board.
The other side of this philosophy is the pilots’ workspace. The G700 uses the Symmetry Flight Deck, with active sidesticks and touchscreen interfaces. Automation helps the crew manage information through the different phases of flight. The manufacturer also develops its service network: for an owner, access to maintenance matters alongside the aircraft’s capabilities.
How the brand’s ideas appear in its models
The G280 belongs to the super-midsize class, while the G650ER, G700 and G800 are intended for longer intercontinental routes. Range, dimensions and the number of cabin zones vary within the family. Features described for the G700 cannot automatically be assumed to apply to other generations.
When choosing a Gulfstream, compare the journey’s duration with the opportunities for rest on board. Separate zones are particularly useful when some passengers are working while others sleep. The exact variant and layout matter more than the brand name alone: the G650 and G650ER, for example, have different range capabilities.
